past.jin-ho was adopted as an infant by lee “lucas” chang-hoon and his wife kang “lana” eun-seo four years into their marriage, becoming the younger brother of lee “chase” chang-min. despite not being related to his new sibling, chang-min immediately adored jin-ho and the two became close quite fast with an age gap of only two years. they did everything together, between exploring museums and chang-min trying to help jin-ho develop his artistic abilities ( though that never came to fruition ) to jin-ho guiding chang-min through the levels of various video games. the two attended the same elementary and middle school together and had discussed attending the same high school, though chang-min expressed a desire to go to an arts high school which jin-ho had no interest in.it was three months into their first year of high school and everything seemed to be going well. chang-min would come home and talk about the various productions his school was hosting or putting on or talk excitedly about what he would be filming for his class and jin-ho would call him a nerd about it. jin-ho’s own studies were going well, though deep down he was a bit jealous of chang-min who already seemed to have goals for what he wanted to do in the future: become a world renowned film-maker.then one day his world collapsed and suddenly finding a ‘life purpose’ no longer mattered.a fire broke out at chang-min’s school when some of the costume props were left too close to some candles. no one noticed until it was too late as the items were being kept in a different room until it was time to use them in the next scene and the entire theatre went up in flames. jin-ho’s father, chang-hoon, who was a firefighter, was one of the first responders to the scene. rescues were carried out as fast as possible but ultimately five students, three faculty members, and chang-hoon perished in the flames.jin-ho, once bright and studious, became closed off — a hollow shell of his former self without his father and brother around. his previously exceptional grades dropped and he no longer cared about the hobbies he had once loved. rumors swirled about at his school on what or who had caused the fire as the names and faces of the victims had been released to the public. everyone knew that chang-min was his brother and every time he walked down the halls he could feel the stares along with the mumbled whispers as he passed. he stopped replying to his friends when they sent him messages and his only companion became slinky, a cat that his parents had gotten him and chang-min as a middle school graduation gift.he may have stopped replying to messages, but that didn’t stop his friends from continuing to try. they still invited him to things in the group chat and while the 1x1 messages slowly died down there was one person who never gave up: his best friend su-hwan.baek su-hwan, known by most as samuel or sam, was a classmate of jin-ho’s in middle school. the two became friends after being paired together for a science project and out of everyone jin-ho knew he would definitely consider himself closest to su-hwan.even through jin-ho’s silence su-hwan continued to text him. sometimes it was about something that happened in class, other times it was about a funny occurrence that happened that day or a viral meme. the little ‘read’ notification never seemed to be a deterrent even though the wall of messages looked like someone telling things to the void.still, it seemed to work. one day su-hwan invited jin-ho out to try a new ice cream spot. the former never expected for the latter to show up so seeing jin-ho standing there was admittedly a bit shocking. their meeting was still almost one-sided for the most part — jin-ho never said a word and su-hwan did all the talking, but it was still a small step forward.over time their meetings became more frequent. su-hwan would invite jin-ho out and jin-ho would actually show up. soon he began to speak again — not in the same playful way as before, but at least actually answering su-hwan’s questions and making comments on things every now and then.one day su-hwan invited him to the pc room so they could play things together “like old times”. there was one he wanted to show jin-ho, unaware of the fact that jin-ho had already been playing it for some time since he had found the game while hiding out in his room and watching youtube videos.“woah. how did you do that? you made it look so easy, bro. you could be a professional!”
